Why

According to the Colombian Health Department, the average age of children getting their first contact with alcoholic drinks is alarmingly decreasing. The study also revealed that most of these “first contacts“ have been promoted by their own families and parents. We were called to design a solution that addressed this issue, promoting awareness around keeping away children from alcohol drinks.

What is this...

WE PROMISE seeks to strengthen values that will enable young people to adopt a responsible attitude towards drinking. The project's purpose is to analyze factors associated with alcohol consumption in youngsters aged 11 to 13 (early adolescence), in socioeconomic segment 1 and 2. The project emphasizes children's relationship with the parents or with people they might look up to, like teachers. WE PROMISE consist in two phases and is meant to be carried out in the classroom, with the teachers' help, or at home with familiar support.

how...

We worked with two middle schools and 4 different grades in two neighborhoods in Bogota. We analyzed and described the community we were addressing in order to understand their relationship with alcoholic drinks and its meaning at their age. The results showed that alcohol consumption at their ages was socially normalized in different contexts, including school and home. Our solution included education around the consequences of early age alcohol consumption and a promise they had to hold with one person they looked up to, them and the school.
