Rethinking Data Policy Statements

Why

How might we redesign data policy statements so that it is not intimidating to read? How might we make users aware of what they are getting into when they accept the terms and conditions?

Disclaimer: This project is in no way done in collaboration or relation to Instagram. Instagram's data policy is used only as an example.

Data Privacy is important. The exponential increase in social media and mobile applications is leading to companies stealing our data. They put out information that is publicly available on what data they use and for what purposes, but, my conversations with a sample set of 15 people revealed that they don't read the Data Policy Statement before they check the 'I accept the terms and conditions' check box

What is this...

An interactive new way of displaying data policy statements to invite user to read and hold the most valuable information of these type of agreements.

HOW...

INTERVENTION:

  1. Easy skim
To simplify the interface of the text-based statement to make it more intuitive.

  2. Informed lack of knowledge
To keep users informed on how much of the statement they have read.

  3. Conscious Agreement
To make users say the words "I accept" to have a more conscious and impactful agreement.
